Barclays bPay Accessibility Audit
This audit describes the conformance of the Barclays bPay website with W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
This evaluation was completed for coursework during the 2017-2018 MSc Human Computer Interaction Design module entitled, Inclusive Design, taught at City, University of London. Based on this evaluation, the Barclays bPay website is close to meeting WCAG 2.0, Conformance Level AA.
The client, Barclays bPay, wants an assessment of accessibility. The goals of this evaluation are to audit the following user journey for our client, Barclays bPay:
User is interested in learning more about the options and benefits of bPay; and User wishes to learn more about and then purchase the bPay “sticker”.
The approach to the evaluation included defining the scope of the exploring the website, selecting sample webpages from site, evaluating the sample, and reporting the findings. The “easy checks” (WAI, 2013) were used to evaluate a variety of criteria to test if the pBay site is accessible. To commence the evaluation after exploring the site, the user journey was established and the following pages were selected to evaluate:
• Homepage
• Buy bPay (shop) webpage
• Basket webpage
• Checkout webpage
The main findings of the site were that there were six violations of accessibility criteria were found, which are as follows:
• Keyboard access and visual focus violation
• Multimedia (video, audio) violation
• Resize text violation
• Heading violation
• Contrast ratio
• Label checks violation
The following is a summary of recommendations of proposed changes to the bPay website:
• Add headings to markup on basket webpage
• Ensure that all relevant text meets the contrast ratio of 4.5:1
• Verify that the keyboard focus should be visible on each page element by using a highly visible border color on the selected item or higher contrasting highlight color
• When text is made larger, ensure it doesn’t warp and format incorrectly
• Implement captions on video 1 that can be turned off and on and specified languages are listed and include captions on video 2
• Add labels to quantity form on checkout page
